During this term 5 in Birch Class we are learning about:
In Maths (Y2) we will be learning about fractions. Children will be introduced to the concept of fractions and will look at unit and non-unit fractions. Year 3 pupils will carry on deepening their understanding of fractions and money. Year 4 pupils will continue learning about decimals and money.
In English we will use two wonderful books as a stimulus for our writing:
- “The First Drawing”, by Mordicai Gerstein, in which children will explore the text, including exploration of the Stone Age and cave paintings. They write diary entries, explore the conventions of speech, create character descriptions and finish by writing their own historical narratives.
- “Cinderella of the Nile” by Beverley Naidoo and Marian Vafaeian. Where children will discover a very different version of Cinderella which will motivate them to write reports, diary entries and character descriptions leading them to write their own version of the story.
In Geography, we will wonder about “what is it like to live by the coast?” Where children will locate the seas and oceans that surround the UK, will explain what a coast is and identify the physical features of it. It will also bring the opportunity to investigate the use of the coast by people, make questions and find out and represent their findings.
In RE, we will start a new branch “To the end of the Earth” - giving the children the opportunity to understand the importance of receiving the Holy Spirit and its fruits and the celebration of Pentecost and its significance.
In Science, we will study “The light” - Recognising that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light, and learn that the light from the Sun can be dangerous and the need to protect their eyes. Children will study some of the properties of light like reflection and the different patterns of shadows.
Additional Information
- PE: Birch Class has PE on Mondays & Tuesdays.
Homework
We appreciate your support with your child’s homework. Each week, the children will be given:
- Reading assignments
- Spelling practice via Edshed (games have been assigned for each child to practice their spellings). Your child’s login details can be found in their reading record book, along with their TTRS login for times tables practice.
It’s essential that you hear your child read as often as possible. We ask that children get at least three signatures in their reading diaries each week.
We would love to have volunteers to read with the children. If you can help, please come and speak with us!
